Controversial right-wing talk radio host Michael Savage dubbed Barack Obama an "Afro Leninist" on the June 6, 2008, broadcast of The Savage Nation, his nationally syndicated program. The statement was reported on the liberal-leaning media watchdog blog MediaMatters. The term is a reference to Obama's African heritage and the early Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin. Savage made the reference more than once in the broadcast, and had used the same phrase on his April 14 installment.
